Finding the Java console window

[Note: this web page was originally written in 1998 and the information has dated somewhat since. It is included in this website for completeness.]

The Java console window is where the "standard output" from the applet is directed. Useful information about errors can appear here, and the EWE applet also sends information to it. Getting the window to appear, however, is not always easy.

In HotJava

If you are using HotJava, choose the menu View -> Show Console.

In Netscape

If you are using Netscape, choose the menus Communicator -> Java console, or Communicator -> Tools -> Java console in later versions.

In Internet Explorer

If you are using Internet Explorer, choose the menu View -> Java Console. If this menu option is not there, you probably need to turn it on - use View -> Internet options. Tab to Advanced, then under JavaVM, turn on the option Java console enabled. You need to restart Internet Explorer for this to take effect.
